Eastern's performance of Footloose had the audience practically jumping out of their seats!
To Dance, or Not To Dance: Footloose, a musical adaptation of the well-known 1984 film, debates this topic heavily. This musical opened on Broadway in 1998, going on to be nominated for Tonys in acting, music, and choreography. In a town struck by tragedy, a powerful story of youth rebellion unfolds: a new student, Ren, must stand up for the right to dance. This musical hints at themes of love, authority, and freedom, showing that it is never too late to forgive.
With electrifying energy that only intensified throughout the show, this production was a well-rounded success! Its combination of a strong cast and dedicated stage crew made for a performance that knocked the audience's socks off!
Ren (Isaiah Gallagher) had the perfect balance of comedy and consistency, with strong humor, acting, and vocals. His character shone through in songs such as "I can't stand still," where his passion for acting was evident through his infectious energy. Idleanna Torres as Ariel was an equally talented counterpart. The emotion she portrayed in her role enhanced the narrative and helped the audience develop a connection to her character. Her vocal and acting range, along with her talented, lovely, and impressive dancing, revealed her ability to draw the attention of the entire audience into her scenes. These love interests had enchanting chemistry on stage that perfectly emulated young love in a sheltered place. Their relationship dynamic was one that seemed natural and authentic, demonstrating their deep understanding of their characters as well as the story that they were conveying.
The ensemble definitely kept their "feet loose", expertly staying together during complex choreography. Their ability to keep their vocals steady while doing so in numbers like "I'm Free / Heaven Help Me" showcased an impressive stamina and dedication amongst the entire group. Willard, played by Andrew Steiner, was such an easy character to enjoy on stage. His expertly balanced, strong vocals and charming character made for a comedic, lovable presence that the audience thoroughly enjoyed. Mya Glasofer (Vi) took her role above and beyond, maintaining operatic vocals with beautiful tone and talented acting. Chase Prowisor also electrified the audience from the very start of Act Two as Cowboy Bob, setting the tone with a strong vocal entrance and lively presence.
Technical aspects made this show stand out even more. The use of lighting to redirect the audience's focus on different parts of the set during each scene enhanced the already stellar portrayal of the story being told on stage. The stage crew blended into the show with clever costuming, making transitions smoother and more visually appealing to the audience, especially in Act 2. By far one of the most impressive technical elements of the show was the student orchestra. Their ability to keep time and learn all of the music to a semi-professional level was a very impressive component of this already amazing musical.
Eastern High School's production of Footloose left the audience saying, "Let's hear it for this show"!
