Mamma Mia! @ Delsea Regional High School

Gimme gimme gimme, some more of this! Delsea Regional High School turned the lights down and turned the music up for their sparkling performance of "Mamma Mia".

"Mamma Mia" is a romantic comedy jukebox musical featuring music from ABBA. The story follows a young girl Sophie who is about to be married. She wants to have her dad walk her down the aisle; however, there is one problem — she has three possible options and only 24 hours to figure it out.

The frantic energy was well matched from the show. A solid highlight was "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme" which contrasted the fun of a party with Sophie's desperation to find her father. Tech elements, such as the fantastic set, creative lighting, and clever props reflected the fun elements and theme of the show.

Julia Dennis, playing Donna Sheridan, had beautiful vocals. She stole the stage during her number "The Winner Takes It All." Demonstrating her acting, she took audiences on an emotional roller coaster, moving her character's despair into triumph. In addition, she was able to express other sides of her character through numbers such as a hard worker in "Money Money Money" and a tender parent in "Slipping Through My Fingers." Sophie, played by Paige Effinger, had a wonderful signing voice as well, demonstrating some emotions through her singing.

In addition, there were great moments and story lines with some of the supporting characters. Specifically, the hilarious dynamic between Donna's friend Rosie (Jordyn Blacknall) and one of the dads, Bill (Ire Johnson) in their number together, "Take a Chance On Me," one could feel their chemistry. Their comical character choices matched the overall tone of the show. In addition, after final bows, the ensemble performed a high energy eight minute dance segment, which was a delight to watch.

The student made set absolutely transformed the stage into the taverna on the island. Complete with a bar, string of buoys, and lovely brick wall proscenium, it served as a way to transport audiences into the cast's world. In addition, the transition of the set from the bright day time into the party at night was great teamwork by the set design and lighting crew. Through a dazzling disco ball center stage and colorful lights radiating out, the stage turned into a celebration. In addition, in the final number, "Waterloo," actors gave out fun necklaces and trinkets to the audience. Overall, the tech elements of the show were very well-executed to bring everything to life.

In conclusion, Delsea's production of Mamma Mia was a "Super Duper Trouper!"
