"So fetch!" perfectly sums up Gateway Regional High School's energetic production of "Mean Girls".
"Mean Girls", the hilarious Broadway musical adapted from Tina Fey's 2004 film, premiered at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. in October 2017 and officially opened on Broadway in April 2018. With a Tony-nominated creative team (Tina Fey, Nell Benjamin, and Jeff Richmond), the story follows Cady Heron, a newcomer from Africa, as she navigates the competitive world of suburban Illinois high school and clashes with a powerful clique led by Regina George. With its sharp humor, relatable themes, and plenty of "you can't sit with us" moments, "Mean Girls" is a timeless tale about friendship and the ups and downs of adolescence.
The performance was truly remarkable, showcasing a highly energetic cast that handled difficult choreography with skill, all while the actors kept the audience laughing throughout.
The leads were superstars with phenomenal vocals. Cady, played by Mia Wenglicki, was a true powerhouse, delivering stunning performances in songs like "Apex Predator," where she roared with confidence, and her powerful low notes in "Do This Thing" made everyone feel like they could take on the Plastics. Wenglicki really brought Cady's transformation to life, capturing her journey from a wide-eyed newbie to a confident queen bee, all while maintaining a fantastic chemistry with her fellow cast members. Regina, played by Shai Wallace, dazzled with her effortless vocals and hysterical acting skills. Her performance in "I See Stars," especially when she comically portrayed being dazed on pain medication, was so impressive that it truly stood out!
The rest of the Plastics, Gretchen and Karen, played by Ava Hopkins and London Cassagnol, embodied their characters and showcased impressive vocal talent. Hopkins shone brightly, balancing humor with elegance, especially during "What's Wrong With Me" and "What's Wrong With Me (Reprise)." Meanwhile, Cassagnol embodied the playful, "totally silly" character of Karen. Her comedic timing left the audience in fits of laughter. Janis, portrayed by Frankie Hargrove, stole the spotlight with her powerful rendition of "I'd Rather Be Me," while Michael Cassagnol as Kevin G. delivered an unforgettable rap in "Whose House Is This?" that had the crowd cheering. The ensemble truly impressed with their harmonies and strong vocals, perfectly blending with the chaotic energy of "World Burn."
The set design was outstanding with clever use of levels that brought the high school environment to life. The lighting in "World Burn" authentically captured the song's intensity, and the costumes were spot-on, showcasing both the typical high school vibe and the distinct personalities of each character.
The production was outstanding! Gateway Regional High School's performance of "Mean Girls" not only entertained but also reminded everyone that although high school may feel like a jungle, we can navigate it with a little courage and plenty of laughter.
