The PROM @ Audubon High School

Washed up Broadway stars, a conservative town, teens hiding their true feelings. A show that is definitely Changing Lives with its theme of love and acceptance using humor to Zazz up the show! Audubon High School truly portrays this message with their production of The Prom.

The musical The Prom was written in 2016  based on a true story, with concepts from Jack Viertel and lyrics by Chad Beguelin. It then made its Broadway debut in 2018. This musical follows the journey of a girl named Emma who is not allowed to bring her girlfriend to prom in the conservative small town in which she lives. With the help of four washed up Broadway stars, Emma truly expresses her Unruly Heart.

Audubon's diverse group of performers brought together the perfect cast for this production. Each actor conveyed beautiful emotions through body language whether under the spotlights or not. The cast and crew put in their own unique energy to build the chemistry between each character on stage. The audience feels the genuine connection as the cast makes it feel like Tonight Belongs to You.

As the musical goes on, the chemistry between Dee Dee Allen, played by Lilly Low, and Barry Glickman, played by Kyle Brown, evolves from a competitive relationship into an influential brother-sister dynamic. The tone of Changing Lives in act one and the tone of Changing Lives(reprise) shows the immense character development that both of these actors are able to portray with grace.

Alyssa Greene, played by Abigail Bradshaw, is certainly an important aspect in the theme of accepting oneself and others that Audubon is attempting to portray. Abigail Bradshaw's performance of the song Alyssa Greene illustrates tenderness and raw emotion. As well as the performance of Mrs. Greene by Lizzy Holland expresses Mrs. Greene personality growth with excellent diction which conveys Mrs. Greenes' close-minded character.

Beyond the performances, Audubon's technical elements further brought the story to life. Their use of the auditorium adds an interactive atmosphere in conjunction with the colorful lighting; making the audience feel It's Time to Dance. The set design's open frame allows for large set pieces to be quickly and easily moved on and off the stage. One of the highlights of the show is the use of moving lights to replicate those of an actual prom, which was truly a sight to behold.

The lights, ensemble, actors, music, and stage crew allowed a beautiful performance. Audubon's production of The Prom not only entertained but also left the audience with a powerful message of love and acceptance-one they won't soon forget.
